2 file releases on SourceForge

The first is simply the re-release of WriteWord-v2.0-beta.
I had placed it in the wrong package the first time around, so it's now in the proper one.

The second is the first "glimpse" of the planned WriteWARE application.
Basically just the graphical shell (although most non-file functions do work).

Intent is to give a rough idea of what it will (hopefully) eventually do...

SourceForge and misc.

The project is registered at SourgeForge.net as of 6/6/2005, so files are now available for download and all that good stuff.

Miscellaneous notes:

  • Being that I've actually done a good bit of web page design in the past, I feel oddly self-conscious for using a *gasp* template for this blog--oh, the shame! heheh. Perhaps when I get a chance I'll design something, but you know how those "when I get a chance" things go...

(Actually, I think this one is quite good as templates go, and fits the subject of the blog, or the goal of the project at least, rather nicely.)

  • I'm less than impressed with the current About posting myself, and this I will work on in the reasonably near future.

About WriteWord

About WriteWord v2.0
(beta)

By: M. Caviston, B.S.
Date Last Revised: 5/30/05

This initial program is the (very) beginnings of a project I am calling WriteWare, which I envision to be an application with a variety of tools for creative writers.

As for right now, WriteWord is a Rich Text Format (RTF) text editor/word processor--the focus still being on the tools most useful/necessary for creative writers.

Please note that I am not a professional programmer, just someone who has taken a couple of introductory courses in Java and is mostly learning/teaching myself as I go. Therefore, any help, suggestions, etc. would be especially appreciated!!

Basic Features/Capabilities since Version 1.0/1.5

  • Print + Print Preview

  • Undo/Redo

  • Find/Replace

  • Set font attributes, text alignment, line-spacing

  • Word Count

  • Spell Check

  • "Plug-in" capabilities for dictionary, thesaurus, and grammar check tools--WordWeb, Everest Dictionary, Grammar Slammer

  • Some preferences/default settings

  • Multiple Look & Feel and theme options

  • An extensive resources menu of writing-related websites

Major changes in v2.0

Tabbed Multi-Document Interface!:
  • Using Infonode's TabbedPane API
  • Allows for a variety of look and feel and view customizations

An additional side tools panel that includes:
  • A basic notepad to jot notes, cut + paste to, etc.
  • Easy access to find/replace functions as well as a word frequency tool
  • A reference calendar, includes all dates between years 1000-3000

...And more...

Known bugs

  • Paragraph alignment attributes do not save--This is a bug known by Sun, however the Java Bug Database says it is "Closed, will not be fixed"

  • Select All function: It DOES word by accelerator key, but not through the menu item. I found multiple reports of similar problems in the JBD, but no solutions that were clear and/or worked.
